Another Milestone, The First Review For One Of My eBooks!

Yes, at long last another of those milestones, and they do seem to be coming faster and faster.  A Letter To Doctor Freudstein - Demoni - And Ten Poems is the first of my eBook published works to be reviewed, by Mr. Fear In Words himself, Jason Darrick, and it was an open and honest one too, just as I've always hoped for.  Like me Jason is unbiased when it comes to reviewing, and he expressed how he felt about the stories and poems, as well as the collection overall, as I always hope that any good reviewer will.

Thanks, Jason.  (I just know he still respects me and is going to call me later....LOL).

In other news, a couple of days ago KDP went live on Amazon France, so all my works as well as those of Jason Darrick, Rebecca Treadway, Mia Natasha and so many other independent writers are now available to an even broader audience.  I will be updating the site with link information sometime in the near future.

Lurking Back To Lurk Forward

As a writer you always have things going on to keep you from making deadlines, whether they're from a publisher of some form or whether they're selfimposed.  I've had My fair share of blocks and dilemmas.  And then on course there's always a writer's worst enemy, "Hey wouldn't it be cool to start on this thing instead of what you're doing now?"

Well, having had success with new distributors I realized that I was sitting on quite a little trove of stories that might do well formatted and put out for eReader.  My stories Town Slut, Honcho and Balcony Diddling are in my cross hairs.  And then there was that need to get something that has Michael C. Laney and horror on it ahead of those other projects slowly being written over time.  Okay, so maybe it is still going to be more a foray into erotic horror, but it will still be horror.

The idea is a collection with the long title of A Letter To Doctor Freudstein - Demoni - And Ten Poems.  In this collection will by My short story, A Letter To Doctor Freudstein along with the poems Jack-O-Lantern Lady, Beneath The Bright Zombie Moon, Woman With Plumage, The Gorgon, The Crypt Below, Graveyard Sunrise and Dance Of The Elder Gods.  It will also include the previously unpublished erotic horror short story Demoni and poems Mummy Waits, Critter and Coffin Banging.

If things go well the editing should be done in a couple of weeks, and I expect the above collection and Balcony Diddling to be ready to go, and Honcho released as a free eBook story on All Romance eBooks.

Of course I assure you that work does go on with My other projects as I get ready to adjust to yet another work schedule change.  I am really (I mean really, really) getting to the final stretch of It Takes Two To Matango.  And last week I wrote the opening scene of Heather's Journey: The Manual Of Discipline!

Hearing Those Words, "I Bought Your Book"!

Today I reached a milestone, and it was a surreal moment that left Me feeling giddy for the rest of the day.  August 25, 2011, is the day I heard the words I had dreamed of hearing from the moment I first sat down and wrote a story that wasn't a part of a school assignment.  I've dreamed about it and imagined how it would come for 25 years, how it would sound, what that moment would be.  Of course it came out of the blue, and I was totally unprepared for it.

"I bought your book."

This was said to Me by a member of the management team at work, someone I felt pretty unlikely to buy or read My available works so far because of their adult nature.  I learned that she knew I was published a couple of weeks ago, and when she first mentioned buying one I did warn her that they were all erotic in nature.  She said she would wait for Me to write a horror novel, just in case she found reading erotica from someone she knew to be a little too weird.

She changed her mind, however, informing Me as I was on My way out the door.

"Which one?," I asked.

"The one with the big blond woman on the front."

Already giddy, excited and taken off guard the only thing I could think of to say was, "That's My wife on the cover."

She tried to apologize, thinking she had offended Me, but I explained that, and actually said that, I was feeling a little giddy.  It was unexpected.  I had seen comments online before, and "chatted" through print online, have even been read by a high school classmate, but never before had anyone said to Me, face to face and in person, "I bought your book."

Of course it isn't the monetary gain that I was fixated on.  I had not been expecting trumpets or grandier (things of course I had dreamed of early on).  But just hearing it period, after so many years of being content that writing was only going to be a private hobby, made Me feel that I had made it.  I achieved a forgotten goal.  I have mentioned before that My intention was not to let another year pass without making a royalty check, which is already an accomplished goal, but I have to admit that I really had not set any others, aside from the hope of finishing a couple of projects.  Even reworking and publishing A Day In The Life Of Abagail King as a fully fledged novel was a spur of the moment decision.

So here I am, a goal and a desire accomplished, out of the blue and with no warning.

"I bought your book."

Would I like to hear it again, and again?

Yes, of course.

However, I seriously doubt that any time that I hear it after today that it's going to have the giddiness inducing and somewhat humbling effect that it did that first time.

The Kindle As An Editing Tool

When you're an independent writer, truly independent, you tend to get creative in finding ways to save time and get the most you can out of whatever you have at your disposal.  Earlier this year I bought Myself a Kindle, mainly since Amazon's Kindle was what I knew was going to be the main avenue of getting published and available to a broader audience.  Very early on I realized that it was a great reasearch tool, and from almost day one I was using is as just that, not only putting several books on it as reasearch material, but also using the Kindle's bookmarking and highlighting features.

Then, after putting the converted files for the stories I had already published on My Kindle, so I could see what they looked like without having to buy My own work from Amazon, I had another idea come to Me.  If you could highlight reference material then you could also highlight errors in works in progress.  Kindle could be more than a reading and reasearch tool, it could be an editing tool as well.

A few days ago I finished the rough draft for A Day In The Life Of Abagail King, and as soon as I had the words "The End" written down, I converted a copy of the file and put it right on My Kindle.  Then over the course of the next few days I read over it and highlighted My mistakes, finding it a lot more convienent that trying to hunt through lines of text on My computer monitor.  I don't know.  There's something about the way things show up on the Kindle screen that makes those stupid mistakes jump right out more than when trying to track them down in Word.  Plus there was the comfort factor.  I got to relax on the couch and get the feel for My work before sending it out for publication.  I even did a little editing while taking care of some business, if you know what I mean.

Yes, if you use your Kindle as an editing tool you can do you editing almost anywhere.

With the Kindle as an editing tool I knocked out My edit, easily finding my mistakes in My Word draft and correcting them all within a matter of a couple of hours.  Plus when you use you Kindle to preview your work before publishing it you get a chance to see it the way your readers are going to see it, hopefully cutting out any unpleasant surprises.  Plus I have to admit I get a little jacked when I look at all My handiwork such as special text and pictures that make My works stand out more than anyone else's.  (If only more people were taking the opportunity to purchase them.)

 Using the Kindle to edit really sped up the process with A Day In The Life Of Abagail King, and I hope it will do more of the same in the future.  In one day I edited text and pictures for the novel, filed it with the Library Of Congress, and uploaded it to Amazon.  Now Kindle didn't help Me file the copyright, but it did save Me at least a couple of weeks work, and has made Me feel a lot more confident that a majority of simple mistakes didn't slip past Me and make it to the Kindle Edition.

Give it a try, and I think you'll agree that Kindle is a device that has more uses than you may have initially imagined.

Oh, My! How The Publishing Game Has Changed!

 

 

About 16 years ago I made the decision that to better be able to enjoy writing that I would pursue it as a hobby as opposed to a profession, despite the fact that it had always been My dream to become a published author.  The main reason I made that decision all those years ago was that writing was a hard business to break in to, as I shopped around for potential publishers for Whispers Of Darkness.

As I am sure many struggling writers know, back then writing and publishing was one of those games that was pretty much reserved for the rich, or at least those who had a significant money to blow.  If you didn't have the money to self-publish through a vanity press, then you had to take the real hard road.  Publisher did not want to hear anything from you unless you had an agent.  Agents were not willing to represent you unless you had already been published.  Hell it would have been easier for a 15 year old to get an unsecured credit card than a serious writer with a stack of manuscripts to ever get his first book published.

Since learning at the beginning of the year how easy it was to have an eBook submitted and published, and actually publishing Heather's Journey: The Sound Of her MASTER'S VOICE only a matter of weeks later it made Me realize that the game had changed, as eBook publishers like Amazon, Barnes & Nobel, Smashwords, Lulu and dozens of others have effectively cut out the middle man.  What more could an independent and budding writer want?  No scraping and bowing to publishers over content.  No need to share fractional royalties with parasitic agents when many eBook publishers allow upward of 80% royalties dependent on the selling price.

Yes the game has indeed changed, and today that became even more apparent to Me.

This morning when I opened My mail box I found the most unexpected thing.  A letter from a publisher.  In it the publisher stated they had discovered Me through researching the Library Of Congress and noticing that I had a work now registered there.  Which seems to me is a clear indication that publishers are now trolling the archives of the Library Of Congress because the eBook market is putting a hurting on them.  I was also offered the chance to have My work reviewed by them, and I could send them a typewritten copy (oh, how quaint) to see if they would be interested in publishing it.

I had to laugh to Myself a little.  So this is the latest thing that I am going to be bombarded with?  Publishers coming to Me and wanting a chance to look at My work to see if they found it worthy of publishing?  I laughed a little louder, realizing that this publisher was in turn cutting out their own tried and true middle man, the literary agent.  I called the lady vyle and told her, saying "If all it took to get published back in the day was to send a copy to the Library Of Congress I would have done it.  However, back then publishers wouldn't have bothered."

Did I find the offer a little bit tempting?  Maybe just a little.  But I had never heard of Dorset Publishing before, plus I was sure that My content would not have been what they were looking for.  Were it Random House or Balentine or Berkley I would have probably been a little more tempted.  But then again, despite the fact that I'm not sitting on a huge mountain of money, or planning My retirement from My day job because the things I have published are selling so well, I kind of like being the Master (not sure if a pun is intended there or not) of My Destiny.  It's a lot of stress in some ways, because self-promotion in just that, Me promoting Myself with the help of a few friends such as Marabelle Blue, Nicola Matthews and Jason Darrick.  But on the other side of the coin I have the power to write My own jackets, to design My own covers, control all of My content and set My own pace.  After being overlooked and neglected by publishers I find that I'm not ready to give up My independence, or even consider it seriously if there was a mainstream publisher that wanted to put My work into print.  Were I vain, I would have went out and bought a printer and paper, and had a print copy ready to send out by the end of the week.  But I'm not.

I love the status I have as an independent writer.  I'm proud to be published, even though it is only in eBook format.  People look at you differently when you tell them you published an eBook.  You can tell that the average person on the street doesn't see that as being as glamorous as being published in print.  But, I don't really thing that attitude will last too much longer.  The world is changing by the month with the development of new technologies.  The publishing game has changed.  Print publishers and literary agents no longer hold the power.  The power is in the hands of ePubs and independent writers.

Where's the proof?

Well, I found the proof in My mailbox this morning.

The Horrors Of Editing Part II

 

They say the first is the worst and I have to agree.  Especially in the past year I have learned that each time you have to go through and set up a file under a different format, or according to a different set of rules, the first time you try it is always the worst.  It's through that first time you learn, at least most of, the ins and outs.  Plus you figure out about 92% of what is causing you grief.  Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, I started off with the longest work I have on hand on My PC, a story I have edited, re-edited and reformatted more times that I am willing to contemplate.  Once again and even though it has only taken a little over three weeks, it has been a nightmare, the kind of self torture that anyone with OCD hates to deal with, yet endures because we want so much to strive for perfection.

After yesterday I am sure that I am about as close to perfection as I am going to get working to have Heather's Journey: The Sound Of her MASTER"S VOICE ready for e-book publication.  Sure there are a dozen or so little "dashes" in there that I have no idea where they came from or how to get rid of them.  Sure it does not have a program created Table Of Contents, but since anyone giving advice on the subject seems to be under the impression that "Everyone" is computer savy when it comes to dealing with HTML, and when I followed all their exact instructions none of  the codes worked, One can only assume there are probably 1,000's of e-books without a program driven Table Of Contents, and instead one listing the line location numbers like I painstakingly set up Myself.  Again, probably not perfect, but I think most readers can get past the flaws considering how flawed the text was during the sligltly abridged and chapter by chapter publication the novel had initially online.

So for all intents and purposed The Sound Of her MASTER'S VOICE is done, so it's all over but the screaming.  It all comes down to getting the funds to copyright and secure an ISBN number, which will hopefully be taken care of this week.  Aside from that I need to take care of cover art and a new picture of Myself to go in the about the About The Author blurb at the end.  The pictures are a couple of simple (yeah right!) things to deal with, and I should have them done and the cover edited by the weekend as well.  So if everything goes without a snag (and I am sure there will probably be some snags) the best case scenario would be that the novel will be available sometime within the next two weeks.  (I bet you thought I was going to say next week, and I was until my pessimism won out.)


So what comes next?  Well I am already beginning to get together My next project, a short story collection themed around Fungi.  I decided in the beginning that this was something I just had to do, because if someone was going to steal it and make a single dime off having it in "their" collection, then it stood to reason it would fare well in a collection of stories that were all by Me.  Again the process is made easier by the fact that I have already perhaps worked out most of the kinks of getting the first e-book ready for publication, so as with other things when it comes to the second time, I now pretty much know what to do and what not to do, hopefully saving Myself a few headaches.  Fungi will be in this collection along with three other stories and a poem, all so far unpublished.  Unpublished?  Hell, the truth is I haven't written a single one yet.  Yes, I know.  It's pretty ambitious, so for the moment I am not sure how long it will take Me to have the collection available.

 

 

Plus still to come... My BBW story collection to be made up of both previously published and original erotic BBW short stories and poetry.  After several weeks I have to admit that the title Rubenesque & Ravishing has begun to grow on Me a little less.  I will be coming up with another title, but I think I have one in mind unless someone can throw Me a very good suggestion.  This will be another work that is going to be built as it progresses, so at this time as with the Fungi collection I do not have a specific time frame.

Shifting Gears? Gear Secondo!

Over the past few days, with everything that has been going on I began to investigate how self-publishing through Amazon.com's Kindle worked.  Although some of the tutorials that Amazon has posted on YouTube are so jumbled and boring they make Me want to saw My own balls off with a butterknife I found the whole process relatively simple.  After thinking about it I discussed the idea with My wife, the lady Vyle, and she agreed with My ultimate conclusion, that if someone could use this method to rip Me off and make a profit from it, then why shouldn't I?

Yeah, okay. It's getting into bed with the "enemy", or it least in as much as getting into bed with a company more interested in (it seems) stretching it's own profits as far as they will go instead of quickly removing the library of a know plagiarist.  Then again what makes that different from any other job?

No, I'm not happy with Amazon, but as far as being published their Kindle does seem to be the best avenue.  All third party e-book publishers are filled with the craziest restrictions and are so clicky that it isn't even funny.  I've browsed subjects and looked at reviews on books Amazon is selling that cater to just as many "deviant" sex practices as Xnxx or Storiesonline, so My stories would actually be somewhat tame as the subjects of several erotic novels they are selling include underage incest, beastiality, adults with underage sex partners, etc. (In other words stuff that I was reading from King and Johnstone in the 90s that most legit erotic story sites won't touch).

I want to go to the next level, and in this economy if it takes getting published through Amazon to put a few extra dollars in My bank account then I will do it.  However, and more importantly, My goal since March of last year was to reach a broader audience, and being associated with a more mainstream site would certainly get My works exposed to a larger potential audience at the very least.

So, despite My differences, as I have with the story submission sites I have worked with over the past year, I am willing to put those differences with Amazon aside and test the waters to see if e-book publishing will be benificial in filling My need to tell a story to as many people as possible and maybe reap a slight financial benefit as well.
