Review: Chilly Eye Callie and Walk The Dream by Rebecca Treadway

Today I'm going to kill a couple of birds with one stone.  No, not the ravens and crows that Rebecca Treadway takes pictures of to use on book covers and other bits of artwork, but rather a pair of her works that I've had for a while.  The first sat in my Kindle collecting dust for a while as I read other things, while the other I read the day I purchased it, and it has been languishing in my review backlog.

First up is the short story, Chilly Eye Callie.  Calpurnia Bowens has her father's eyes, although she didn't get them through an act of genetics.  She's a woman with several gifts, or curses, depending on your point-of-view.  While riding the train home Chilly Eye Callie, as the locals call her, senses something is amiss with her two fellow passengers.  Yes, somebody is doing somebody wrong and it's a situation that's possibly going to change someone's life forever.  Callie uses her gift to take care of the problem in her own way, and just a little bit extra as well.

I loved getting a look at the more gritty side of good California living that Rebecca gives us with this story.  Her characterization of Callie is really good, and that was a treat, since a majority of her other works I have read so far have been poetry, so it was great to see how she handled making a believable character.  If anything the length of the story does work against it slightly.  There a great deal of mystery surrounding the title character, and many of these mysteries remain unresolved as the story comes to a close.  I suppose it is a good thing that there's a follow-up novella coming soon!  The story not only held my interest from start to finish, but also left me wanting more (and it's good to know more is coming).  Four and A Half Stars!

The second Rebecca Treadway work up for review is Walk The Dream, a poetry collection.  Now if you've read some of Rebecca's other poems and poetry collections, but you haven't read this one, then you need to go out and buy it.  This collection is full of poems that show the "kinder and gentler" side of Rebecca Treadway.  I can think of no better example of someone showing their versatility than this collection.  Again I usually do not review individual poems, but I have to say that "Medicine Man", "Arcane Words", "Chambers" and "Elsewhere" are my four favorites from this collection, and each one kind of speaks to a different part of me from the nostalgic to the romantic.  (Yes, I did say romantic in regard to something Rebecca Treadway has written).

Is there anything else I really need to say about this collection to get you to check it out other than Five Stars all the way?

Review: Sam by Lisa McCourt Hollar

Because it's that most wonderful time of the year, HALLOWEEN, it means it's time to kick back and watch some good old horror movies and read some horror stories.  This short story Sam by Lisa McCourt Hollar mixes two of my favorite things neatly into one quick read:  pet fish and zombies!  From the description alone I knew I just had to, and am very pleased with this Five Star story!

Tommy is upset when his pet goldfish, Sam, dies, so he takes him to the psychic across the hall, who cast a spell to bring him back to life.  Now Sam is a hungry little fish, a very hungry little fish, and that little box of Hartz goldfish food ain't gonna cut it.

It reads like a YA tale, and has just enough gore in it to keep it from getting out of the hands of a PG-13 audience.  Lisa McCourt Hollar gives you a little tale where nothing is wasted.  Short, sweet and brilliant.  I loved it.  Plus it has an awesome cover done by Rebecca Treadway, which actually lead me to find this cute little gem of a horror story.

Lurking for a short and sweet read for the Halloween Season?  Here's where to get your copy of Sam.

Review: The Little Book Of Fuck You by Rebecca Treadway

There have been very few bright spots for me over the past couple of weeks.  The headache and sinus infection I have been suffering from has had me zapped to the point that all I wanted to do was be in total darkness, liquored and pilled-up.  Even getting Honcho and A Letter To Doctor Freudstein - Demoni - And Ten Poems out there and live did not make me feel very well, and in fact I feel pretty robbed by not being in a celebratory mood over the event as I usually am.  Oddly enough one of the things that has managed to make me feel a little upbeat is the song 'Rhaposdy In Blue' by J-Pop super-group DA PUMP.  And the other was a wonderful little piece of poetry.

You see I had been reading this total piece of the smelliest cheese you can get from Ellora's Cave, a little gem titled Her Very Special Robot, that was so awful it just made the migraine I've been suffering with for two weeks worse. Once I finished that off I turned to this, my head eased, I had a laugh, and like Shawn Michaels was able to find my smile again. Rebecca Treadway has a way with words that truly make you feel like you've found a kindred spirit.

The Little Book Of Fuck You is a long poem Rebecca wrote after being awakened in the early morning hours by her arguing neighbors and how it made her feel.  Her thoughts are real and surreal, sometimes bordering on horror and tinged with a little religious imagery.  I could relate, I've been there with neighbors past and present.  Believe me, in the time it took me to get through this poem I indeed had a smile on my face, and felt just a little less alone in the world.  So obviously, Five Stars!

Now for you nit-pickers and naggers, I know some of you will complain that you actually have to pay for a single poem.  And there is much use of the N-Word, sometimes ending in "a" and sometimes ending with an "er".  But, like me, Rebecca writes in the real world, and in the real world that's how people talk, and if you would like to know my views on that subject in more detail search back in the archives for a little essay titled, "Why I'm Not Afraid To Use The N-Word When Writing".

Really if you're the kind of person that has a problem with words and paying their hard earned cash of a single poem, trust me it wasn't written with you in mind.  Except for maybe the poem's underlying theme...

"FUCK YOU!"

Review: Grotesque Mind Circus by Rebecca Treadway

Treadway's Grotesque Mind Circus does more than putting a little Poe in poetry!
Every once in a while a body gets in the mood for poetry.  There's nothing more soothing that a good verse or two to describe a heart bursting with the joy of love, or the beauty of a sunset over the ocean.  And sometimes there's a line or two that will make you laugh, funny little things that would almost be a song if they only had a music.

Sometimes you want to pick up a pen and write down a few lines of your own.  You open up your heart and lovely words about the ones you love easily flow across the page.  Other times you feel funny and goofy and want to put down something to share the laughter.  All those oh, so sweet nothings that raise your spirits and pour the joy in your heart out for all the world to see.

Ah.....Ummmm... Then there's Rebecca Treadway's poetry and prose collection, Grotesque Mind Circus.  Well, I don't know if it's art...

...BUT I LIKES IT!

If you're looking for cute rhymes and purple prose look elsewhere. Grotesque Mind Circus is a collection of poems that shows you what a writer can come up with when they're fed up with the world, po'ed and want to vent. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but once you take the words in the spirit they were meant you realize that you've pretty much been there too!

Treadway gives up no less than 32 short poems in this collection, so I won't go into detail on each of them, and they are all a mixed bag of angst and anger, with just a tiny bit of horror thrown in here and there.  I have to say that R.I.P. is perhaps My own favorite, as well as a sweet little jab at the average jack off on the street named, Watch This And LearnWannabe's is another great one about wannabes and idiots that I took to heart.  Finally in My four favorites is The Pedestal, which has something about it that reminds Me of Jim Morrison's spoken word works.  "I can't write romance, it's impractical, wishful thinking."  Love it!

Now I can't say I loved every single poem in the collection, but as I have mentioned before it's rare for Me to find any single anthology or collection where I feel every single piece in it is on the same level.  Everything here comes from the author's mind over a period of time and usually when she was in a bad mood.  I'm pretty sure that such poems as This Ass, Man Whore In Circulation and This Vagina will make some male readers believe that Rebecca Treadway is a card carrying member of the She-Woman Man Hater's Club, but the truth is women put up with a lot of shit from men, and you don't have to be in a club or pigeon holed with one label or another to want to vent about it.

I know I may be one of Rebecca's Horror Homies, but judging from other reviews Grotesque Mind Circus has been given on Amazon I can assure you that I'm not just giving her biased praise.  I give it a four out of five stars overall.  Some readers may be put off by the fact that it's $1.99 for a collection of short poems that can easily be read in a couple of hours, but hey, an independent writer has to eat, and believe me it's well worth it.
